Wearing Fashion Jewelry with Religious Symbols

The act of wearing fashion jewelry means many things. More than a fashion statement, it is an expression of your unique, individual style and preferences. It can also be a way of wearing your mood, your advocacy, or even your personal or religious belief. Some common religious symbols seen on fashion jewelry are crosses, the Star of David, or the Om symbol (which is the Hindu symbol of the absolute). One would assume that only followers of a certain faith would wear a symbol associated with their religion. Ironically, this is not the case when it comes to fashion jewelry. Take the case of fashion jewelry necklaces with cross pendants which are popular among fashionistas regardless of their religious affiliation. Buddha-shaped pendants are also popular among non-Buddhist fashion jewelry wearers.

Aside from proudly wearing their faith, there are several other reasons why people choose to wear fashion jewelry with religious symbols. One of these reasons is because some people believe that wearing a certain religious symbol will work as a talisman or protection against unsavoury elements. However, this belief does not only hold true for religious symbols. Some well-known birthstones used as fashion jewelry ornaments are also believed to possess protecting powers. Examples of these birthstones are garnet, aquamarine, amethyst and peridot. Another reason for wearing fashion jewelry pieces with known religious symbols is sentimentality. If a particular fashion jewelry item is a gift from a special someone, the receiver would be more likely inclined to wear it—regardless of what it represents.

Religion is a sensitive issue and when wearing a fashion jewelry item with a known religious symbol, you should be aware and informed of how people will react to it. The best way to do this is to wear it with respect. Do a little research and find out if there are certain restrictions to wearing a particular religious symbol as part of a fashion jewelry item. Always remember that fashion jewelry, regardless of what symbol is on it, is meant to make people feel good.
