Maintain your engagement ring’s luster for years to come with a few simple tips.
So your man finally asked the question, and you said yes! And because the engagement ring he gave you is such a valuable piece, whether it’s crazy expensive or not (of course, it should not matter!), proper care should be your priority. You’ve got to give it the TLC to make it look new for years to come. It also goes without saying that it signifies a huge milestone in your relationship. With that said, we listed down five simple ways to take care of your engagement ring.
Pick a safe hiding place.
If there is a need to remove your engagement ring, you should make sure to keep it in a place where it’s safe and where you can easily get it. Although you can place it in a ring holder with your other fashion rings, it’s best to keep it separate from your other jewelry pieces. Your engagement ring should have its own box to protect it from scratches and place it somewhere it won’t get lost. Perfect places are your dresser, on the bedside table, or in an electronic storage safe.
Avoid getting it in contact with harsh chemicals.
The ring’s luster might wear off quickly if it always gets in contact with harsh chemicals. These chemicals include lotion, perfume, and other cleaning agents. This is especially the case if your engagement ring has gemstones as they do not do well with harsh chemicals. That is why it is highly advisable to remove it and let whatever it is you applied on your skin dry up first before wearing your ring again.
Do not wear during rigorous activities.
If you live an active lifestyle, it’s best to remove it before you start doing rigorous activities. This is because it increases the risk of the ring getting scratched, misshapen, or worse, losing the center stone. Such activities include intense workouts, swimming, playing tennis, and other sports activities. So before you leave the house, keep your engagement ring safe inside a ring box.
Avoid removing it public.
One thing to avoid is to remove it in a public place, especially when traveling abroad where it’s going to be a lot harder looking for it when it gets lost. If you need to use a public restroom, do not, we repeat, do not remove your engagement ring and nonchalantly place it on the sink’s ledge. Many things might happen to it — someone might take it while you’re busy freshening up or it slips down the drain. So be pretty careful with your engagement ring in a public place.
Lastly, do not forget to clean your ring. The accumulation of dust and oil is inevitable and lucky for us, it’s pretty easy to remove. All you need is a soft-bristle toothbrush and a mild soap and water solution. Gently brush the ring, rinse, and dry with a lint-free towel. Don’t forget to clean underneath the center stone, as well as the nooks and crannies of the piece. Make sure though that you all this far away from a sink! Otherwise, you might drop the ring down the drain.
